Introduction • Open the X-Files...

The X-Files is a division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation devoted to unsolved cases that appear to have some unexplained, paranormal element. The files take their name from the filing cabinet where they were kept - originally filed under U for unsolved, they grew to big for the drawer and were moved to the less populated X cabinet.

Originally opened in 1946 by J. Edgar Hoover - who wanted a series of murders with a half animal, half man suspect investigated - the X-Files became a dumping ground for reportings of UFOs, alien abductions, and other arcana that the FBI didn't want to investigate, or didn't believe in. At least, that was the case until Fox Mulder, a high flying serial-killer specialist, requested transfer to the forgotten basement.

A true believer in the paranormal, a result of witnessing his sister's abduction as a child, he soon started to ruffle feathers in the Bureau. Eventually, he was assigned a partner - the sceptical, scientific Dana Scully. She wasn't just there to help him - she was expected to report back in order to discredit the wild-card Mulder.

Slowly convinced by the mounting evidence, Scully became Mulder's staunch ally. Over years of investigating cases no-one else would touch, the pair have come across paranoia inducing gas, vampire fetishists, the Mexican Chupacabra, plagues of grasshoppers and Luke Skywalker's love child. But this is just the detail...

The key to the files runs deeper than any strange phenomenon - there's a conspiracy at the heart of the government, and aliens are trying to take over the planet.

X-Files Personnel • Fox William Mulder

Agent Mulder is convinced that his younger sister Samantha was abducted by aliens while we was paralized by some unknown power, and his memories altered. He believes that extraterrestrial powers, perhaps aided by rogue government organizations, are continually visiting this planet. These unusual beliefs have earned him the nickname "Spooky" among his peers.

Although he is well respected professionally, personally he is considered a maverick by other agents. His personality does not fit the profile of the ideal Bureau agent, although his record of success in his assigned area puts him among the top agents working in the Federal system. Mulder's work on the X-Files have diverted him from his promising career path at the FBI. Once a high-flyer, he is now confined to the basement.

Mulder's dedication to uncovering the truth about his sister became a source of increasing alarm to his parents, especially when he came to the attention of a shadowy individual known as the Cigarette Smoking Man. Not only is the CSM an aggressive member of the conspiracy, he was also an old friend of Mulder's father, and an even closer friend of Mulder's mother.

X-Files Personnel • Dana Katherine Scully

Agent Scully is a well-respected and highly organized agent, knowledgeable in the areas of forensic medicine and pathology. She does not share Agent Mulder's beliefs in the paranormal.

Dana Scully spent the first year of her undergraduate school at the University of California, Berkeley, near the Alameda Naval Air Station, where her father was stationed. At Berkeley, Scully had a brush with political activism, particularly antinuclear protest groups, though her involvement never went further than reading leaflets and engaging in occasional spirited discussions with her father. After one year there, she transferred to the University of Maryland.

Agent Scully was initially assigned to the X-Files in order to spy on Mulder, but gradually drew closer to him as she realized the importance of his work. Her medical training has been invaluable to the Bureau in the investigation of several cases.

Scully has followed Mulder through thick and thin, albeit with never wavering scepticism.

Her work with Mulder has come at great personal cost. She briefly had a pet dog Queequeg, until it was eaten by an alligator. After her abduction by the conspiracy, Scully discovered she had contracted cancer and could not have children. Her sister was accidentally assasinated by the conspiracy, and her relationship with her brothers is frosty.
